Photosynth, check it out

If Photosynth is half as cool as it looks in the demo video, stitching photos together just got 1000 times more interesting. Photosynth can stitch photos together in 3D and, if there are enough photos, reconstruct any view of a location. Just watch the demo video and be amazed.

The team's blog says the processing time required can currently range into the hours or even days for a large set of photos. If cameras could start tagging photos automatically with GPS coordinates and compass orientations, perhaps a high percentage of comparisons could be avoided on the basis that they can't possibly contain views of the same location. Either that, or we finally have a good use for multi-core processors :)
