Office to kitchen proximity

Despite having five different offices at Microsoft and recently starting a new job, I just realized that I've almost always had one of the offices closest to the kitchen. During one expansion of the Microsoft office, I actually moved from directly across from the old kitchen to two doors down from the new kitchen. Now at ChannelAdvisor, I'm right around the corner from the kitchen.

What's funny is that I didn't pick several of these offices including my current one. Maybe it's like in Blink and people are putting me by the kitchen because they subconsciously think I look hungry.

Now I'm wondering about the relationship between office-kitchen proximity and job performance. Does the increased fluid intake keep me working at my peak or simply make me spend more time walking to the bathroom? Would I be more productive if I overheard fewer random kitchen conversations? Are the overheard discussions of everyone's kids' hijinks making me subconsciously dread having some of my own?

Some of the universe's greatest mysteries may never be answered, but with luck and a grad student desperate for a thesis the secrets of office to kitchen proximity could someday be unlocked.
