Akismet for Movable Type

I recently got fed up with blog spam and decided to try out Akismet. Akismet is the collaborative spam filtering system created for Wordpress that I'd read some fantastic testimonials about.

I thought I'd have to switch over to Wordpress from Movable Type to take advantage of it (which I may still do at some point for other reasons), but it turns out there's an official Akismet plugin for Movable Type called MT-Akismet.

In the past twenty four hours, Akismet has correctly blocked dozens of comment and trackback spams while only letting two through. This is a huge improvement over the built-in spam filtering plugins in Movable Type. Thanks Akismet!

Make sure to mark any spam comments that make it through as Junk and not just delete them. MT-Akismet will send that information back to the Akismet system so it can adapt it filter.

Also, assuming you are running with Apache, I highly recommend running MTAutoBan with MT-Akismet. MTAutoBan can save your server during a comment spam flood by blocking the attacking IPs at the web server level sparing your server from starting up MT to handle each bogus request.
