Run X windows on Windows with Cygwin
Remotely managing Linux machines from Windows is perfectly do-able with an SSH client like Putty, but what's your mouse supposed to do while you're pounding out keyboard shortcuts in Vi?
Sometimes it's handy to remotely run multiple side-by-side editors, a visual diff tool, or other graphical applications and for that you need an X server for Windows. Luckily, there's a free X server included in Cygwin and I wrote up some instructions for setting it up for use with Putty.
